Bintan is a favourite weekend getaway destination from Singapore due to its proximity - easily reached by an hour's ferry ride. Pulau Bintan is one of the islands lying in the Riau archipelago of Indonesia. It makes a part of the Riau Islands Province, and holds an ancient heritage as a trade post along the route from China to India. The northernmost section of the island is lined with luxury resorts and is even home of a golf course designed by the legendary Jack Nicklaus. Bintan is known for beaches and golf resorts. Singapore is the closest major city and catamarans traverse the route daily.
From the interior of Bintan, to the perfectly sculpted landscape of the northernmost resorts, the area is scenic and peaceful. It's a beautiful escape from the city just an hour from Singapore. Eco-tours are easy to find, with many locals offering guided treks and travels through the area. Whether you are exploring solo or with a guide, there is a lot to find.
The Norther tip of Bintan is the best area to stay if you are on a golf trip. The golf resorts have spacious rooms and on-site or nearby golf courses of international standard. Watersports are also popular activities out here. The key to a good time in Bintan though is picking a great resort by the beach, where you can enjoy luxury in your room and swimming in large outdoor pools - some even have water slides for kids.
A visit to a Bintan spa is also a must. For spa hotels look for hotels near Trikora Beach. The resorts with private beach access give you access to full-service spa facilities which include deep tissue massage, reflexology, massage services and body scrubs.
Most of the watersports in the region are attached to the resorts in the northern reaches of Bintan. Hop on a ferry from Singapore to the island for a bit of snorkeling, eco-tours into the dense surroundings, fishing, kayaking or scuba diving. The Santa Maria Cave is a grotto which no cave diver should miss. Accessible only by boat, this is a popular diving spot. The azure waters light up with life as divers delve deep enough to explore this underwater cave system. Take a breath of courage and grab the opportunity to explore these fascinating caverns hidden off the coast of Bintan.
A popular excursion is a tour through the mangroves. This is particularly interesting at night. Take advantage of the eco-tours which take you into the forests, while a tour towards the hour of midnight will award you with the unforgettable sight of thousands of fireflies hovering atop the waters. Don’t both trying to take a photo, as the luminescence cannot be captured.
Across the Bintan hotels and resorts in the area, you'll find a broad range of cuisine encompassing food from all around the world.
For a bit of shopping in Bintan, head to a central shopping location around Plaza Lagoi and Pujasera, in Kota Sebong. At Plaza Lagoi in the centre of Lagoi Bay you can find the broadest range of souvenirs, while Pujasera is the prime place to go to find authentic Padang food.
