As the historic Hindu Champa Dynasty capital and first Vietnamese city to fall under French rule, Da Nang contains centuries of history. Vietnam's third most populous city is often overshadowed by Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi, but Da Nang is well worth a stopover. Da Nang is a rapidly developing city, but its atmosphere remains relaxed and much of its history remains intact. The famous China Beach, which locals call My Khe, is one of several lovely beaches on the nearby Son Tra peninsula.
No Da Nang visit would be complete without setting eyes on China Beach. My Khe, as locals call this stunning stretch of white coastline, is best known as a popular relaxation spot for American soldiers during the Vietnam War. Today, surfing is among the most popular of the water sports at this beach resort that is now filled with high-end hotels and spas.
Visitors wishing to come to the island of Cham can either take a leisurely wooden boat tour or a more rapid speedboat journey. The Bai Chong area is famous for its coral reef snorkelling and seafood dining, but the island also features a lively local market and a pagoda called Hai Tang. A hill station called Ba Na, 40kms west of the city, is the best place to escape Da Nang's sweltering summer temperatures.
Restaurants and Bars
From Asia's first Michelin star restaurant to the seafood restaurants lining Pham Van Dong, Da Nang has no shortage of different places to eat. The city's central location means the cuisine served at its restaurants comes from all corners of Vietnam. There are at least two different Da Nang food tours. Despite Da Nang's sleepy reputation, the city's nightclubs tend to stay open later than those in Hanoi. The seaside shacks which serve cheap beer stay open even later into the night.
Han Market, the busiest in Da Nang, sells seafood, fresh fruit, and traditional Vietnamese clothing at affordable prices. This bustling market is just a short distance away from Da Nang's most modern shopping centre. Bowling clubs and cinemas stand next to the boutiques and restaurants inside these two shopping complexes. The most authentic and highest quality handmade souvenirs, however, are sold by the locals in the nearby mountain village of Non Nuoc.
