"We are a family of four with two teenagers. We stayed over Christmas and loved our stay. We travel a lot and this one will be my favorite. This is a large resort so yes walking is necessary but not horrible if you can get around. We took the ferry to the hotel 45 minutes then a taxi to the hotel. I give the hotel a 9 in everything. It’s clean, the food is great, the beach is beautiful and clean. Staff goes out of their to help and friendly. Lots of activities or you can chill at the pools and they have four to choose from. I have no complaints and would recommend. If I had to give one critique it was the entertainment. It was nice but dated. This hotel had a younger audience and the shows were more for a much older audience. The show was great if you were 60 plus. Again not a deal breaker but it lost a lot of people. The sports bar is fun, pool tables, snacks, and tvs for sports. You won’t be disappointed here! Just remember you need to walk here. Wheelchairs and family members who may have troubles walking would struggle. "

"We really liked staying at the Occidental. It is huge, it was busy but somehow, it is so well designed that it never felt crowded. We were very surprised by the additional fees to be charged at check in ($750 pesos) (why not give a heads up from Expedia or in advance?), and disappointed in the lack of communication by the hotel when we repeatedly asked, months ahead of our stay, for adjoining rooms but managed on day 2 to change rooms to be close TO OUR CHILDREN instead of down the hall. Thank god for David at the front deck as Lily did not help the night before but ignored our ask. But once that was settled - we loved the hotel, the food, the cleanliness. We do think we were a bit hoodwinked by the Chichen Itza trip - which was promised as a 3hr to Chichen trip but was 5 hours to get there because of multiple buses. We would return to Occidental."

"Our trip was amazing. We had a wonderful time with our family. The resort is beautiful and clean and the staff were all very friendly and accommodating. Restaurants were all great. Lots of pools. Lots of food options. Lots of kid friendly activities. The only things that we didn’t love was the chair saving at the pool down by the beach was a little crazy. By 8 am all the chairs are covered with towels there isn’t anyone around. But we have been to other resorts that are the same way. Would highly recommend this resort especially with families. "
